Absorption of Sunlight by Water Vapor in Cloudy Conditions: A Partial Explanation for the Cloud Absorption Anomaly
نویسنده
چکیده
The atmospheric radiative transfer algorithms used in most global general circulation models underestimate the globally-averaged solar energy absorbed by cloudy atmospheres by up to 25 W m−2. The origin of this anomalous absorption is not yet known, but it has been attributed to a variety of sources including oversimplified or missing physical processes in these models, uncertainties in the input data, and even measurement errors. Here, a sophisticated atmospheric radiative transfer model was used to provide a more comprehensive description of the physical processes that contribute to the absorption of solar radiation by the Earth’s atmosphere. We found that the amount of sunlight absorbed by a cloudy atmosphere is inversely proportional to the solar zenith angle and the cloud top height, and directly proportional to the cloud optical depth and the water vapor concentration within the clouds. Atmospheres with saturated, optically-thick, low clouds absorbed about 12 W m−2 more than clear atmospheres. This accounts for about 1/2 to 1/3 of the anomalous absorption. Atmospheres with optically thick middle and high clouds usually absorb less than clear atmospheres. Because water vapor is concentrated within and below the cloud tops, this absorber is most effective at small solar zenith angles. An additional absorber that is distributed at or above the cloud tops is needed to produce the amplitude and zenith angle dependence of the observed anomalous absorption.

The accuracy of water vapor and cloud liquid determination by dual-frequency ground-based microwave radiometry
A dual frequency ground-based radiometer operating in the 1 to 1.4 cm wavelength range can provide continuous measurements of integrated water vapor and cloud liquid water. Using climatological data, the accuracy of the vapor and liquid determinations is estimated as a function of cloud amount. Limiting factors in the water determination are uncertainties in water vapor absorption coefficients ...

[1] Knowledge of the absorption of sunlight by atmospheric gases, aerosols and clouds is key to understanding climate and its variation. Several studies suggested that clouds absorb sunlight significantly more than what models predict. Other studies suggested that the anomalous absorption is present in cloud-free conditions. Here we measure absorption in cloud free atmosphere using the Aerosol ...

2-(3- indolyl) – 4,5 di phynyl imidazole.(IDPI) was used as a complexing agent in cloud point extraction for the first time and applied for selective pre-concentration of trace amounts of cadmium. The method is based on the extraction of cadmium at pH= 7.0 by using non-ionic surfactant Triton-X114 and 2-(3- indolyl) – 4,5 di phynyl imidazole. (IDPI) as a chelating agent. The adopted concentrati...

Recent studies suggest that resonant absorption of sunlight by cloud droplets may constitute a significant and unaccounted-for solar energy sink in the atmosphere. We spectrally resolve, for the first time, all solar absorption, including sharp resonances, in typical liquid water clouds. Resolving all sharp resonances requires a resolution in size parameter χ = 2πr/λ (r—droplet radius, λ—incide...
